I have created a plaster mask of my face and ive made tusks that i want to attatch. Ive been thinking of the best way to do this..without the plaster. I thought maybe using silicone in those tubes for caulking up bathrooms and such. will this substance attatch securly to the plaster? or will the dusty parts make it peal off. I would very much appreciate some ideas! I was thinking of smoothing it out over the back. anyways..thanks a bunch!

1- how are you going to finish the plaster? Maybe it will stick better if you have a base coat of something . . .
2 - If the tusks are not too heavy the silicone might work . .
      3 - You could glue them on . . . E6000 or Barge
4 - Is the mask solid plaster or do you have some webbing in it to prevent breakage?? I think I might have set wire in the plaster, as a core for the horns . .

well..inside the tusks is peices from a plastic coathanger, so they are light but more durable. Unfourtunatly i didnt put anything else in the plaster. It might be too late for wire? What did you mean by 'webbing'? I had thought of putting in these plastic strips along the back, maybe under the silicone. (IF it would work.) Im just hoping now i get to rock it b4 i destroy it. Its decently hard but im sure a foot could crush the thing if it wanted to. I will be careful with it, its all in fun anyways!

Its my first mask so not professional or anything, but super fun learning experience!

I havent put any finish on the plaster yet. I was originally thinking the tusks should go on first, but that makes more sence to coat the plaster stopping the dusties.. What do you suggest I use to finish? I was going to paint it, maybe acrylic. Should i paint a sealer/glue down first? thank you again for the help!

        I will eventually post a picture! : )

I had a couple different thoughts going when I replied, but when I reread your original post I realized that the tusks were already completed . . .
          1. I would coat it with any base paint, acrylic is fine . . .
          2. My thought about the webbing was in case you wanted to drill through it and add wire, since it is already cast . . .
          3. I am not sure what process you used to get a solid plaster cast of your face; I usually do strips of cheese cloth and then smooth it with plaster . . . but depending on whether you do reverse casts you can always lay a layer of net or mesh behind to give the plaster more strength. I also, generally line the inside with felt (especially if it is worn on the face)' I spray glue the felt and shape into the features . . . this also strengthens it . . .
          4. again, if your tusks are light weight, I base paint your mask, glue on tusks, base paint them, and then decorative paint the whole thing (I usually put numerous paint layers on so it looks rich and thick and doesn't chip as easily . . .

thank you so much Anam! I really appreciate the tips. I wasnt sure if glue would hold..and what kind of glue to use. I was consittering the felt and almost positive that is the route i am going! Thanks again for the encouragement!

i have decided on not using silicone. I have now decided i am going to patch up the space i needed filled with foam, and glue the tusks onto the foam. Its gonna be alot lighter. I dropped on the floor pretty hard yesterday and it was good as gold, so its pretty durable. : ) good thing.. anyways..thanks again! I painted it as well its looking awsome! i cant wait to get a picture uploaded..

i still have not found a way to attatch the the tusks. Silicone wont stick to anything that is dusty, it likes a smooth clean surface. Im new to kamloops and going to check out the library for mask making books tomorrow for more ideas. I need to get more plaster if i plan to add more to get those tusks on....

Silicone will repel paint. You have to add color to the silicone and allow it to dry.

Are you making a mask out of plaster? This I couldn't understand from the original post.
