Making a Positive Plaster Mould?

Hi, everyone!

I'm Clarise, a new member to this tribe, and a relatively new mask-maker.
So far I've decided that Paper Mache will be my medium of choice, and I've successfuly completed my first mask and am working on my second.

I bought some face forms from Dick Blick Art Supplies (they're wonderful, by the way) and have been using plasticine clay to sculpt my masks onto them. So far, all I've been doing is coating the clay in Vaseline and covering it with Paper Mache. However, I'd like to make plaster positives of my clay sculptures so that I can re-use the plasticine (save some money) and so that I can have a permanent and rigid form to cast more masks out from if I want to.

I have a bucket of Plaster of Paris, so I'm wondering how I can use that to create a positive mould. I've worked out how to make a negative mould, but I would love to learn how to make a positive mould. All help is greatly appreciated (and all helpers worshiped temporarily).

Thanks very much, everyone!

Sincerely,
Claire

you can actually make a mould (negative) by using plaster and cast it in plaster
this takes some care- first to make the negative fairly thin then to coat it with a seperating agent- greensoap is great dish soap will do in a pinch. then pour plaster
once it is set you can carefully crack away the negative

Make a mold of your mold is the short answer. Mold the face you have created, support the mold with extra reinforcement on the outside-- a box of sand or more plaster is good. Then grease up the inside of that and pour into it-- you should end up with a plaster or hydrostone (nice and water proof) version of your initial piece.
    Good luck!

hi there i am actually a special fx make up artist we do these types of things all the time what i find easiest is if you want really good detail use alginate. cover ur face with petroleum jelly make sure to get every where then put on the alginate make sure not to cover the persons nostrils after that sets up which only takes about 5-10 mins depending on the type of alginate you get you then make lay plaster bandages over that once you have covered every where nice and thick and making sure that the nostrils done get covered by the plaster you then wait for that to set up once that is complete take all of it off and fill the nostril holes with a little alginate let that sit for like 5-10 mins then place the alginate mold back in the plaster bandage mold and start pouring in ur plaster of paris after that just wait till plaster sets up and boom you have ur positive mold
